A pottery shop beloved by local people “SASAMOTO-TOUKITEN”
We visited SASAMOTO-TOUKITEN, located two minutes’ walk from Seijogakuen-Mae station., where we interviewed Ms. Yokoyama.
SASAMOTO-TOUKITEN is a pottery shop that was established 56 years ago. (The business has started around the year of the Tokyo 1964 Olympic games.)
Originally, Yokoyama-san’s grandmother started a store named “SASA-YA”, specializing in liquor and groceries.
She wanted to open a shop specializing in pottery, after seeing some potter products that were sold as a side-line in SASA-YA. Then she opened a pottery shop named “SASAMOTO-TOUKITEN”. The shop was not initially at Seijo, but it was moved to Seijo along other businesses because of the Great Kanto Earthquake.
The main item of the shop is tableware for daily use such as bowls and teacups. Most of the products are Arita ware from the Kyushu region. The shop is paying attention to buy in items that customers will like. Recently, the number of customers from different countries has been increasing, so the shop sells chopsticks and towels featuring the Japanese flag and sushi as souvenirs.
The important thing at work is to do business slowly. In the past, there were more customers than now, but now they are doing business leisurely and slowly. They also value talking to customers and listening to them.
One of the things that makes Yokoyama-san happy is the encouraging words she hears when conversing with customers.
Yokoyama-san said, “It’s not something that started with me, but because it’s an extension of my grandmother and my father who have been working hard at this store. That’s how this kind of relationship with my customers has been established.”
The only difficult thing is that only two people are running the store. So, if something happens, the store has to close for a while.
Other than that, there are many things to be thankful for, and we have the kind of joy that can only come from doing business in a leisurely way.
The future goal of the store is to be able to delight the customers and to continue to do their best, continuing what has been handed down from generation to generation.
